Interventional Cardiology
Interventional cardiology is the practice of treating heart conditions using only local anaesthetic (percutaneously) with minimal access techniques.
The commonest condition treated is the chest pain of angina or heart attack due to coronary artery disease (narrowing of the heart arteries). The treatments most commonly used are stent insertion (a metal meshwork scaffold) and coronary angioplasty.
Other treatments include the use of a rotating diamond tipped burr (rotablation), ultrasound imaging of the heart arteries and use of a pressure wire to assess narrowing in heart arteries.
Newer interventional techniques being developed are the treatment of valvular heart disease, closure of holes in the heart and the treatment of hypertension by delivering radiofrequency energy waves to the renal arteries.
Dr Robinson is a very experienced high volume interventional cardiologist. He started training at King’s College Hospital in 1993, and continued at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the London Chest Hospital. He completed training as an interventional cardiologist and was accredited with a CCST subspecialising in interventional cardiology in 1998.
He has worked as a consultant in London teaching hospitals at The London Chest and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals and went on to develop The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre.
Dr Robinsons private coronary angiography and coronary stenting is done in London at The Harley Street Clinic as well as The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre.
Dr Robinson is highly experienced in the management of stable patients with angina but also emergency patients with heart attacks. As previous lead for the Essex Cardiac Network he helped to set up the current service which treats heart attack patients from Essex directly at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre with stent insertion.
Dr Robinson has submitted all his procedures for audit at local and national level. His complication rates are low and compare favourably with national data presented by the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society.

As well as being a highly experience interventional cardiologist Dr Robinson’s practice covers the full spectrum of adult cardiology.
His particular expertise is in the diagnosis and management of chest pain due to coronary artery disease. He has been fully trained in diagnostic angiography (taking pictures of heart arteries) since 1996 using radial (from the wrist) and femoral (from the leg) techniques.
